Week One Photojournalism Post

Hi, I'm Brenda. I'm a writer and photographer who specializes in travel writing and photography. I have a passion for travel because I really love to experience new places, new cultures, and see the world through new lenses. I've travelled to 26 countries, and a few years ago, I took a year off and backpacked through Southeast Asia and Europe - it was amazing!

When I'm not traveling, I love to be outdoors in my home state of Oregon. I enjoy hiking, kayaking and attending the numerous events that take place all year long across the state. 

I'm also a part-time journalism student at LBCC. I decided to study journalism because I want to improve my writing and photography skills. I'm a proponent for life-long learning and I hope to continuing improving my writing and photography and learning new skills for a long time to come. 

My goals for photojournalism this term are to:

  • Learn to take better photos of people in everyday life.
  • Learn to tell a story through my photos; and 
  • Learn to find the right photos to take.

2020 Oregon Golden Gloves Boxing Championship

Every February, competitors from every corner of Oregon and every walk of life come to meet in the ring and battle for the title Oregon Golden Gloves Champion. For some, the road to this moment is long and paved with sacrifice. But still they come; with smiles on their faces and dreams in their hearts, hoping that at the end of the night they will don the blue and gold jacket that will brand them a champion forever. Half an hour before the competition starts, the audience trickles in to fill hundreds of available seats in the large auditorium of the Salem Armory. Adapt and Overcome

The Story of an Adaptive Athlete Brandon Wood and his twin-brother, Sean Wood, were born prematurely with a condition known as cerebral palsy, or CP for short. CP is a group of disorders that affect a person's balance, and their ability to move and maintain balance and posture. Despite this condition, Brandon Wood is an athlete and has worked hard to overcome the physical challenges that CP presents on a daily basis.  Brandon Wood coaches the beginners boxing class at Ramos Boxing Club in Albany. Wood began coaching about 10 years ago and coaches beginner, advanced, and pro boxers and MMA fighters. Wood graduated from LBCC in 2004 with a degree in criminal justice and afterwards began working with troubled youth, which is what lead him to boxing. Because of the balance issues caused by Wood's CP, he has never been able to compete in either boxing or MMA, but wrestled for six years in middle and high school and trained in other combative sports.
